Buddy and Hosts

We understand visiting a new country and culture can be exciting but also stressful at first. We want to make you as comfortable and welcome as possible. The buddy and host system is there to support you.

Buddy:

Each successful applicant will be paired up with a 'buddy'. This will be a healthcare professional who will act as a support system and friend. They will show the fellow around, answer questions and guide them through their work placement.

Host:

The host will provide accommodation for the fellow in thier home. In some cases the host and buddy may be the same person.

Meet some of our buddy and hosts below.

Alice Hamilton, Dentist, Dundee, Scotland.

Alice is currently a Specialty Trainee in Restorative Dentistry. Here is what she said:

"I'm excited to be part of the Rokadiya Fellowship. Almost 10 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to visit Nepal and gain an insight into their healthcare system. I met many amazing people along the way, who welcomed me with open arms. They not only showed me their healthcare system but also invited me into their homes and families, sharing their culture and delicious food! I made lasting friendships and have many great memories.

I look forward to hosting the Rokadiya Fellowship applicants when they visit Scotland, and being able to return the hospitality."

Shambhunath

Shambhunath is one of the Rokadiya Fellowship Buddies. He is currently a researcher at the Dundee Dental Research Hospital and School.

Suzy Harkness, Dentist, Perth, Scotland.

Suzy is a Specialty Registrar Training in Special Care Dentistry. Here is what she said:

“I first heard about the Rokadiya Fellowship at the Scottish Oral and Maxillofacial Society Annual Conference in 2021. A few months later a successful applicant was coming to visit our unit and I volunteered to host. Working and learning in a different environment and culture can be a challenging experience and I hope to make that process as easy as possible.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to network and I’m looking forward to learning more about Nepalese culture, especially the food!”
